How would you describe your leadership style?

I practice a decentralized leadership style known as mission command, which is based on professional competence, organizational discipline and trust.
I clearly define the problem, the task to be accomplished and the desired end state or goal to be achieved, and then allow subordinates the freedom of action to determine how best to accomplish the task.
This method engenders individual and organizational “buy-in” as well as a bias for action throughout the team. I then supervise execution to provide coaching feedback, mentorship, minor adjustments, and if needed, corrections to ensure mission accomplishment.

How do you get people to perform at new levels?

Communication, empowerment and trust. I have always clearly defined mission success for my teams and communicated it at every opportunity to everyone in the organization.
I empower junior leaders and subordinate units to develop their own methods to accomplish the mission, thereby promoting organizational buy-in, initiative, a bias for action, and trust throughout the entire team.
This creates a high-performing organization with a culture of excellence as its foundation. This culture guides daily conduct, interteam relations, and promotes ownership and pride within the entire organization that raises everyone’s performance.

What do you consider your greatest professional accomplishment?

As a leader, my greatest accomplishment lies in the personal achievements of the men and women I have taught, coached, mentored and led during my 36 years of military service. It’s what you leave behind that matters most and the accomplishments of those you have served is the greatest testimony to your performance.
